Revising The 40 Series for a More Inclusive Theatre History

This paper examines the structure, content, and teaching practices of UCI’s Drama 40 series—a series of courses focusing on the development of “Western” drama, required for all undergraduate Drama majors—arguing that its hyperfocus on Eurocentric narratives is to the detriment of students taking the class. The central thesis is that “In order to create a well-rounded, inclusive, and diverse American theatre, the artists, institutions, and educators that comprise it must first comprehend the multicultural aspects that make up American theatre.”
